Santa María la Mayor Church
Santa María la Mayor Church, located at the top of Baena, Spain, is a historic treasure dating back to the 13th century. Its origins possibly trace back to an earlier mosque, as suggested by the presence of a tower that seems to be a Muslim minaret from the 9th century, though it has undergone later modifications, such as its Baroque bell tower.
With a three-nave layout and pointed arches typical of 16th-century Cordoban architecture, the church features two impressive doors: the Angel Door, decorated with concave and convex grids, and the Forgiveness Door, in Plateresque style from the late 17th century.
Among the preserved artworks, a majestic 16th-century Plateresque grille stands out, now placed next to the new arch of the main nave. Additionally, the Virgin of the Antigua, sculpted in Gothic stone and suspended in the High Chapel, adds an aura of devotion to this place of worship.
Undoubtedly, Santa María la Mayor Church is a living testament to the rich history and artistic heritage of Baena.
