The scenes

Our tradition

Following the traditions of the Baroque period, during Baena's Holy Week, the processional parades feature various characters who reenact scenes from the Old and New Testament, forming a living catechesis known in Baena as "pasos."

Reviving Sacred History every year, here are some of the pasos that can be enjoyed during the festivities.

To Scare

the Evangelist

After a very characteristic trumpet sound of the Baena festivities, a Jew quietly approaches from behind to spy on what the Evangelist is writing, with suspicion, on a tablet. The Jew surprises the Evangelist, and both perform light jumps known as "the dance."

The Embrace

of the Apostles

Saint Peter gestures to embrace the image of Jesus. Then, he passes the embrace to the Apostles, and so on, until reaching Judas. After a moment of doubt, Judas finally rejects the embrace and hides among the crowd of Jews, positioning himself next to King Herod, where he stays for the rest of the procession.

The Sale

of Jesus

Two Jews approach Judas to persuade him to betray Christ. They offer him a series of coins, which they place on a tray on the ground. After rejecting the offer twice, on the third attempt, Judas finally accepts, happily collects the coins, and shows them to the crowd inside a leather bag.

The Arrest

of Christ

Judas, accompanied by two Jews or a Sayón (in the case of the Coliblancos brotherhoods), presents himself to the crowd of Jews with a lantern in his hand. Following the gospel narrative during the reenactment, Judas searches for his master, moving between the crowd and the image of Christ of each brotherhood. On the third attempt, he decisively points out that he has found him, at which point the crowd rushes to arrest Christ, who is then taken away from his brethren amidst a loud sound of drums.
